Focus on nonequilibrium fluctuation relations: from classical to quantum

چکیده
Thefluctuation dissipation theorem is at the heart of equilibrium statisticalmechanics. For a system away from thermal equilibrium, generalized nonequilibrium fluctuation relations have been found in recent years. Fluctuation relations reveal the fundamental connection between the response of a physical system to aweak externally applied force and the fluctuations in the systemwithout the external force. This ‘focus on’ series summarizes the present state of the art on nonequilibrium fluctuation relations from classical to quantum statistical physics.

Nonequilibrium fluctuation relations in a quantum coherent conductor.
We experimentally demonstrate the validity of nonequilibrium fluctuation relations by using a quantum coherent conductor. In equilibrium the fluctuation-dissipation relation leads to the correlation between current and current noise at the conductor, namely, the Johnson-Nyquist relation. When the conductor is voltage biased so that the nonlinear regime is entered, the fluctuation theorem has pr...
متن کاملColloquium: Quantum fluctuation relations: Foundations and applications
Two fundamental ingredients play a decisive role in the foundation of fluctuation relations: the principle of microreversibility and the fact that thermal equilibrium is described by the Gibbs canonical ensemble. Building on these two pillars the reader is guided through a self-contained exposition of the theory and applications of quantum fluctuation relations. These are exact results that con...
متن کاملFluctuation Relations for Diffusion Processes
The paper presents a unified approach to different fluctuation relations for classical nonequilibrium dynamics described by diffusion processes. Such relations compare the statistics of fluctuations of the entropy production or work in the original process to the similar statistics in the time-reversed process. The origin of a variety of fluctuation relations is traced to the use of different t...
متن کاملQuantum free-energy differences from nonequilibrium path integrals. I. Methods and numerical application.
In this paper, the imaginary-time path-integral representation of the canonical partition function of a quantum system and nonequilibrium work fluctuation relations are combined to yield methods for computing free-energy differences in quantum systems using nonequilibrium processes. The path-integral representation is isomorphic to the configurational partition function of a classical field the...
متن کاملQuantum jump approach for work and dissipation in a two-level system.
We apply the quantum jump approach to address the statistics of work in a driven two-level system coupled to a heat bath. We demonstrate how this question can be analyzed by counting photons absorbed and emitted by the environment in repeated experiments. We find that the common nonequilibrium fluctuation relations are satisfied identically. The usual fluctuation-dissipation theorem for linear ...
